Synopsis

In a futuristic age in which robots are being developed as military weapons, a crazed scientist (Billy Chow) develops a technique to transfer the human mind into that of a robot. Rather than becoming hellbent on world domination, he goes on a rampage of rape, with a little kidnapping as a side project. Selina (Chikako Adyama), a cop recently killed in the line of duty, is transformed into a robotic body in order to team up with Cyborg Amy Yip and a bunch of bungling cops, in order to stop the mayhem.

Review

Robotrix is a shameless rip-off of Robocop and The Terminator, and uses those two movies as the basis for one of the most fun Cat III films out there. You see, while the aforementioned US movies were fun enough, somebody in HK obviously thought that the Terminator had ‘Made In America’ engraved where his tackle should have been, and Robocop would have been more entertaining if he had a huge pair of bouncy boobies.

While obviously not made on a huge budget, Robotrix is certainly a well-endowed movie. The obvious American influences aside, there are also elements of science fiction, martial arts and romance, with a thick layer of sex comedy spread liberally over the top to ensure that this is a very tongue-in-cheek affair. Even sections of the film that feel like they should be taken seriously are unintentionally amusing.

In one scene a cyborg is used to lure the robotic rapist into a trap. Most probably due to budgetary constraints, none of the robots actually look very robotic at all, which in the case of Amy Yip, is an advantage. She’s as foxy as ever, and the police decide it’s a good idea to put her in a hotel room and pimp her out to every perv in Hong Kong. It makes sense to me. I’m sure the police whore out their recruits all the time. Of course, this is the cue for another lengthy sex scene, and one of the police (who are watching the whole thing on CCTV) gets a nosebleed. Before they know it, locals are queuing down the block for a taste of the action, so the excited guy with a nosebleed dons a disguise and goes round to Amy to pay for a ride. Ethical? No. Logical? Not really. Funny. Yup.

With the Yipsters presence, and gorgeous Japanese starlet Chikako Aoyama on board, fans of big breasts will not be short changed, and there is lots of bumping and grinding in the film, but it’s sadly not all fun and games. Robotrix does tend to spoil things with the casual portrayal of rape, which was cut from many international versions, and actually left the movie feeling a lot more wholesome as a result. However, if you like your movies uncut as the director intended, then here it is, come and get it big boy.

Apart from all the filth, the movie provides lots of B-movie styled sci-fi action. Built in laboratories full of flashing lights and bubbling green liquid, the robots are built with the secondary function of kicking ass, and that’s what they do. The girls square up to Billy Chow several times during the film, and while the Kung Fu isn’t the most elaborate ever staged, it still gives Chow a few chances to do his Schwarzenegger routine.

Robotrix is no ‘Blade Runner’, but is still a fab robot movie, even if it is for all the wrong reasons. The most surprising thing is that Wong Jing had nothing to do with it, because it’s right up his street.
