Fong Sai Yuk is now a member of the red lotus society, still being unfamilier with the triad he gets into trouble for breaking rules of which he had no knowledge of. Being righteous in nature Fong Sai Yuk quickly becomes rivals with Yu who is cold and heartless and only interested in personal power. Fong Sai yuk is chosen to retrieve a sacred box being transported by samurai to a local lord. Little does Fong Sai Yuk know that this box holds the destiny of the leader of the red lotus society, Yu would stop at nothing to acquire it.
Fong Sai Yuk II is an old school kung fu movie with Jet Li, this movie very similar to the first one. In fact both films were released the same year. The story pretty much follows the first movie, Fong Sai Yuk is now a member of the Red Lotus society and the adventure continues. The story is straight forward with a good mix of action and a little comedy.
You have some of the previous characters come back again in addition to the new cast. There is very little development or background for any of the characters. The characters that really stick out are Fong Sai Yuk and his Mom, especially his mom who is an hilarious blend and mischievous, smart mouth, skilled Kung Fu and caring for her son. The rest of the characters are so so but the main Villain Yu is not half bad, a real dirty kind of guy.
You have some spectacular kung fu in this movie, right in the beginning you have this night time dragon dance assassination attempt that looks great. Then there is the fight with the samurais which is pretty cool. There is a good quantity of action in this movie and it is probably its strongest point. As in most Jet Li movies the Kung Fu is very impressive.
The subtitles were very good on the DVD version, dialog was not overdone so you wont have trouble following it. This is a decent follow up to the original Fong Sai Yuk but there is nothing outstanding about this movie. It's a pretty average Jet Li movie, entertaining but nothing special, but we still recommend this movie all all Kung Fu / Jet Li fans out there.
The picture quality (LTB) was good for an older movie and you have a good surround 5.1. The DVD contains the following extra's : Chapter Selection, Stars files, Official Trailer, Additional Trailers (Fong Sai Yuk I, Tai Chi Master). If you like the movie and would like to own it, get this DVD, but be sure to get the new remastered version.
