Review

Wild Zero is a perfect example of strange and brilliant movies that Japanese can come up with. This movie has Zombies, Rock and Roll, Aliens and super powerful rock stars, yes this movie pretty much has everything. This movie is not fully serious, it has a pretty weird storyline and some crazy things that happen. Also you have the Japanese rockabilly style in this movie, this is an actually style in Japan where they look pretty much like to rock n roll cool guys from the 50`s. This movie is really an exotic mix of many elements, you will notice the story to be kind of strange but it is easy to understand.

If one things sticks out in this movie are the characters, you have a pretty remarkable bunch. With only a few characters in the most almost all of them are important, they might not have any background or real development but each represent something. You have Guitar Wolf, the ultimate cool rock star who is also a hero, then there is Ace the wanna be cool guy. Even those characters that are only in the movie for a short while like Masao seem really interesting. Simply said these characters are very colourful and certainly memorable.

From Rock n Roll shows to zombie invasion this movie has a decent dose of entertainment for you. Beware of *HYPE* because hype is evil, from a lot of reviews of this movie and talk on the net it is made to sounds like hardcore action from start to finish. This is not the case, a good portion of the movie is slower placed, it takes a while for the action to kick in but don't worry the slow paced parts are not bad, well unless you have been charmed by the *HYPE* and are expecting something else. The special effects are good, the zombie are very much like those in movies like Night of the Living Dead and Return of the Living dead because some zombies can talk but they are all slow an stupid. Also keep an eye on the head shot to the zombies, its a pretty interesting use of CGI. Also its important to keep in mind that this is not a serious movie so most of the action will be quite far fetched.

The subtitles are great, that is if you can find them, I wont bother with explaining how we did not have a subtitles button on the remote but basically we had to find them in the Japanese menus. I think it took us 10 minutes of trying. This is a movie with style and a lot of crazy fun, but like we mentioned hype being a bad thing it is the case with this movie. We expected something really incredible after hearing all the talk of this movie but this is not a non-stop action zombie flick. The best thing to watch this movie is without expectation and knowing not to expect anything serious. Then you can be ready to embark on the crazy ride known as Wild Zero, this movie is destined to be a cult classic. To anyone who is able to get a hold of this movie we strongly suggest watching it.

The picture is non-anamorphic and sometime grainy in the darker scenes but except that the transfer is very good. The sound is a decent Dolby Digital 2.0, Extras: 2 Official Trailers, a short Behind the Scenes Featurette and a "Jet Talk" - Audiocommentary by Director Tetsuro Takeuchi and "Ace" Masashi Endo but no english sub for the commentary. This DVD is hard to find and expensive but if you like zombies, guns, crazy characters, weird and out of the ordinary movies this one is a great choice that is if you have a DVD player that can play region 2.
