Review

I finally get to review this film that Tsukamoto along with his Kaiju Theatre created which is a thought-provoking mind bending cult classic that is best described as Guerrilla Film-making.

The screen time is pretty much dedicated to Taguchi or Tsukamoto but Fuijwara has an interesting character as Taguchi's girlfriend that is somewhat turned on yet frightened by her boyfriend's metamorphosis. Tsukamoto is simply menacing as the flipped out metal fetishist obsessed with destruction and seems to have a certain love/attraction towards Taguchi's character. Taguchi, known only in the film as the "man", is pretty much straightforward character: Frightened by the truth of nature linked with his transformation and later accepting it.

Tetsuo The Iron man attracted Tsukamoto much attention and recognition and why not, the film's style is never before seen: eerie stop motion effects incorporating wildly creative violence with frighten ting images of bodies mixing with metal and a hyper kinetic cinematography accompanied by an industrial soundtrack set against an setting of industry.

Now the film does have a quite few reputable ill-famous scenes that you've probably heard of or seen: Mostly known is the metal phallic scene with the girlfriend or basically any metal phallic scène. But these do not render the film unbearable due to the humor, dark although, intertwined within the film. As for the actually violence it comes in the form as a few sprayings or spurts of, hopefully, blood. Shot at nauseating speeds and moving, in terms of plot, just as fast Tetsuo never really explains itself but just keeps bombarding you with chaotic imagery. You might read other reviews that point this out as the film's fault but it did not bother me due to it's fast pace and short runtime which excuses Tetsuo from this. I say screw explanation and bring on the confusion, because here the absolute destruction of anyone or anything is fun to watch unfold.

From watching the film and I hate drawing allusions here but if women have the Vagina Monologues than I guess the men have Tetsuo The Iron Man due to all the phallic scenes which in this film are symbolic of the relationship of man and destruction. You can view it with so many different metaphors which all are understandable: Whether its about aids, man's attraction/role of destruction, how we as a society has become too attached to technology and machinery, or I just love how The Washington Post reviewed it (I'm paraphrasing now) "We are all heading for the scrap heap".

The English subtitles are automatically on when you play the film and are actually quite nice. The DVD is put out by Fox Lorber is region-one coded and includes a startup menu integrated with a chapter selection. On the back of the box it says that it includes the short "Drumstick" but I could not find it anywhere on the DVD. Overall the DVD is pathetic and if you are really interested in the film just pickup the 2 pack edition of Tsukamoto Collection put out by, Studio Canal. The onyl problem, this special edition is PAL and only contain French sub.
