Synopsis

Payu and Long Fei are two mercenaries who sign up for a humanitarian mission to free prisoners held captive on a black site camp in the jungle. However the true nature of the mission was hidden from Payu and Long Fei, they did not know that they were in fact working for a group of international terrorists. Barely surviving the mission, Payu and Long Fei decide that they will track down these terrorists and get their revenge.

Jaka was a guard at the black site. The day the mercenaries attacked he witnessed his wife gunned down right in front of him. While fighting the invaders he was knocked out and left for dead. When he wakes he finds the camp destroyed and everyone dead, he vows to get his revenge against the terrorists. He tracks down Payu and Long Fei but discovers that they are going after the terrorists as well but Jaka decides to seek out his revenge on his own terms.

Payu and Long Fei paths with Xian Xian who is being targeted by the terrorists, being targets themselves they have to run and escape.

Review

TD;DR; This movie features excellent martial art fights, thugs with machine guns shooting everything and chase scenes through the back streets of Malaysia. Unfortunately nothing much else, the characters and plot have about as much depth as a straight to VHS action film from the late 80s.

If you happen to be a fan of quality martial arts and have a craving to see really well choreographed fight scenes then triple threat might be something worth checking out. When I had stumbled onto the trailer for this movie, I was totally sold. It looked exactly like the kind of movie I have not seen in ages and was excited to check it out. Little did I know that I was in for a bit of disappointment. Don't get me wrong the cast did a great job and the martial art scenes and general action was great. However a critical ingredient was missing to make it all work, a well developed story to engage the audience.

The story was basic and straightforward, if anything it seemed more like a premise to stick a bunch of action scenes together. I won't lie, somewhere three quarters in I started getting kinda bored, well with the exception of the action scenes. So many elements of the plot were familiar, things I’ve seen in so many other movies. If it was not for the action elements I would have probably not finished the movie.

Without a doubt the saving grace of this film was the quality of the martial art scenes. Triple Threat totally delivers with a dozen or so high quality fights.  The cast offers an excellent performance with beautifully choreographed fight scenes. Solid camera work catches all the action clearly, martial art fans will no doubt enjoy. The movie also features a lot of military hardware for some high stakes action which keeps the heroes on the run and creates an interesting contrast to the martial arts orientated action.

Triple Threat is essentially an action movie very much in the spirit of no plot hollywood action movies from the 1980s. It's not really bad persay, fourteen year old me would have probably enjoyed it. The formulaic story and generic character just left me wanting more. While this movie won't be memorable it will probably provide some good entertainment for fans of action movies. If you are not particularly a fan of action movies then I don't think this movie is worth a watch.
