Review

TL;DR: Survival Style 5+ is a collection of subplots featuring weird and zany characters, great visual sets and comically absurd misadventures all rolled up in one. More than anything else this movie is a wild experience. Sit back, watch, and be entertained by this uniquely Japanese film.

I first saw this film at the Fantasia film festival many years ago. I wasn’t ready for the insane wild ride that this movie was going to be. Its like someone sprinkled lsd onto my popcorn, I wasn’t quite sure what was going on as I witnessed one absurd scenario after another. Vivid and colourful sets featuring a uniquely strange cast of characters. When it was finally over, I was not sure of what I just watched but I without a doubt loved every minute of it.

Yes, Survive Style 5+ is not your typical movie. Instead of a single plot the movie is composed by a bunch of self contained sub plots feature an absurdist slice of life from some pretty unusual characters. However instead of it being a series of short stories these subplots will briefly intersect over the course of the film, weaving everything together into a cohesive film. It is certainly a different kind of storytelling but its well done, the essential points of the plot are easy to follow so you can fully focus on experiencing the story.

What is specifically great about this movie is that it is full of surprises, it's hard to see what is coming and the twists and turns the story takes, its simply a fun ride. The wacky and zany characters that you will see throughout this movie is the critical ingredient that make it all work. I especially enjoyed Vinnie Jones character that added that extra flavour and comedy to the scenes they were featured in.

Aside from the wacky absurdity, the colourful and wildly imaginative sets featured in this film this film were amazing. There is certainly an artistic flair to the visual experience of this film and its definitely chock full of style. I really have to hand it to the japanese when it comes to creating non conventional films, there are a handful of uniquely absurd films out there and Survive Style 5+ is in my opinion one of the better and more importantly accessible ones.

If you enjoy watching strange, experimental or absurd films then Survive Style 5+ is a must see. Regardless this movie is worth a watch because it will be something uniquely different, this movie definitely deserves a General Tao award.
