Synopsis

A runaway cooling effect chilled the earth after an attempt to geoengineer the climate went terribly wrong. Now the Earth is an uninhabitable ball of ice, the last refuge that remains for humans is a train called snowpiercer. With a network of rails that spans the globe and a nuclear powered locomotive, the train keeps ahead of the cold night. Carrying what remains of humanity, the train is the last safe place.

For those passengers confined in the tail end of the train life is bleak and hopeless. At most they are simply kept alive, victim to the whims of those who control the train. Facing impossible odds they choose to fight for their freedom and to take control of the train.

Review

TD;DR; If you enjoy a movie set in a near future post-apocalyptic setting, if you enjoy a story where an underdog rises up against tyranny? Then I recommend taking a look at this sci-fi action movie featuring an interesting cast of characters that take you on a journey through the uniquely interesting premise behind this film. So if you haven't seen this already go and check it out!!!

It’s not everyday that you are presented with a film that has something new to show you. I’ve always been a fan of movies set in some sort of post-apocalyptic setting. Snowpiercer introduces a whole different flavour of the post-apocalyptic setting. The premise behind the backstory for this movie is straightforward yet world that is painted on screen is really rich is detail. The lives and living conditions of the characters is very well portrayed by the scenery and atmosphere, their desperation is palpable which makes the characters relatable.

Climate change isn’t really a common theme in post-apocalyptic / disaster films, at least not yet. Much like the old nuclear apocalypse films of decades past, Snowpiercer depicts a possible future that brings to life some of our worst fears based real yet distant threats. While the specific disaster in this movie is not likely it is still based on a realistic premise of geoengineering going terribly wrong. Fun Fact: Scientists are planning to spray Sulfur Dioxide into the upper atmosphere to reflect sunlight back into space, this is supposed to cool the planet and slow down the rate of climate change. Maybe a best start building that bunker but first onward with this review.

Personally I was totally hooked and both the story and setting, much like nuclear war it was a possible future which give that hook to engage the audience. It is a world you can imagine living in and that what makes the story so interesting. Without going into deep analysis I will say that the story has several layers to it. From the story you see but also as a commentary on society on the symbolism of class struggle. There are many ways to view this film that are all enjoyable.

I really enjoyed the performance from the cast, so many interesting characters. You watched the heroes of the story struggle as they fought oppressors to free themselves from their dire situation. But more than struggle, the heroes ventured into the unknown, with each small victory they would discover a new piece of the world they were denied from. The main character carry the story well as they progress through the movie, the story and events are pretty easy to follow. The plot is interspaced with action sequences making for a nice pacing of story advancement while leaving room for plenty of excitement. The story behind this movie contains elements of revolution, the hero's journey and nihilistic despair.

The visual style of this movie is really wow, it shows a lot of effort and does so much to set the overall atmosphere in this film. There is a decent amount of action and thrilling moments that compliments very well everything else going on. With many fresh elements to the story and setting and a couple of really interesting developments, I can only say that this is really an excellent movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. This movie definitely gets a General Tao award. If you like well developed films and post apocalyptics settings, make a point to check out Snowpiercer.

As a bonus here is an outrageous fan theory that connects Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to Snowpiercer. Warning, do not watch this video if you haven't seen snowpiercer as it contains spoilers to the plot.
