A suspect is found but the murders continue and the police suspect a copycat but two detectives, closely following the case, believe something of a more supernatural nature is going on. (Take note, the story in the review was keep to minimum to not expose any spoiler)
Another Heaven is a horror thriller masquerading as a police drama, the transition between the two genre is seamless and perfect. What starts off as an ordinary story turns into something more supernatural leaving you wanting to know more. The movie was inspired by a manga and a TV series, you will find the general concept behind to story to be similar to that of other movies such as: The Hidden, The Thing or Fallen. None the less the concept is presented very well in this movie, the story is entertainment and generally easy to follow after you understand what is going on.
Most of the focus was kept on a few characters, you did not have too many people to worry or think about. The main characters in this movie were well developed and given a style of their own. Each of these main characters added a different flavor to the movie in general, such as the two cops, both very well drawn characters and each quite different from each other but complimented each other. We found the older cop to be especially cool, he had the old style, no nonsense, ass kicking cop thing going for him. The killer in the movie was very cool too, colorful but also mysterious enough to keep you wondering. Generally the characters were great in this movie and the acting was very good.
This movie was more action orientated than other Japanese psychological thrillers, what you have is a mixture of thriller, horror, and police action. The movie starts off pretty innocently as the police are investigating murders but slowly the thriller effects start to sink in and build up. The movie also moves at a faster pace than other Japanese horrors and thus probably enjoyable to a wider audience than the slower paced movies. You have a couple of shocking murder scenes but generally there is little gore during the movie. In general the movie is both entertaining for the horror factor and the action factor.
The subtitles were nice and clear on the DVD and the dialog was easy to follow. This movie was very enjoyable, a good Japanese horror movie. The cool characters and the quality of the acting made a big difference in this movie. It's the characters that purvey the emotions in a movie and without those emotions the thrill effect would be far less. Anyone who has seen and enjoyed Japanese psychological horror should take a look at this movie.
Image quality was excellent, a great Anamorphic transfer, the only problem might be that the compression suffers a little during some darker scenes (probably because the DVD is not a dual layer) but except that detail its excellent. The sound is a good Dolby digital 2.0. As for the extras you only have chapter selection and a trailer of the movie. We cant compare this HK version to the expensive Japanese version but we suggest you the HK version since the price is very cheap compared to the Japanese version and the image quality is also excellent.
