1982 - Action, Music, Cyberpunk - Japan
Set in a barren, futuristic Tokyo of highways and wastelands, a rowdy group of punk bands and their fans gather to protest the construction of a nuclear power plant. Riot police and the factory owner's yakuza friends soon move in to break it up. However, the arrival of mysterious, metal-clad bikers and a revolt among the disgruntled construction crew makes for a situation that spirals dangerously out of control… This description, taken from the DVD sleeve provides far more linearity, logic and plot than can be found in the actual film. BURST CITY is preoccupied more with conveying the energy than with telling a story, so… be warned: this city is bursting with power, but is certainly not plot-driven!

Tanuki (raccoon dogs) are wild animals that have been part of Japanese myth since ancient times. The mythical tanuki is reputed to be mischievous and jolly, a master of disguise and shape shifting, but somewhat gullible and absent-minded. Seijun Suzuki uses the Japanese myth of the tanuki to tell a fairytale of PRINCESS RACCOON (Operetta Tanuki Goten), about a tanuki (Zhang Ziyi) that has transformed itself into human form. As a beautiful human, Zhang falls in love with Amechiyo (Jo Odagiri), the son of the local lord, who has been banished for being fairer than the father (shades of SNOW WHITE). Amechiyo and Tanuki-hime are pulled from all sides and told to end their love affair, citing the danger of forbidden love between human and tanuki. But love is a hard thing to give up.

In order to stay rational in all this insanity, they “sing like no one is listening, dance like no one is watching” in this musical epic landmark by anarchist director, Takashi Miike.
